Boosting Patient Safety by Integrating Single-Use Endoscopes with Advantech Medical-Grade Tablets

7/07/2022

As medical procedures and instruments continue to evolve, single-use designs are being increasingly adopted for a wide range of medical equipment ranging from surgical masks and glovesto syringes, ventilators, and catheters. Disposable or single-use medical equipment eliminates the risk of infections caused by cross-contamination.

Creating disposable solutions suitable for diverse scenarios

Endoscopes are widely used in many medical fields, such as gastroenterology, orthopedics, and gynecology, for both surgical and non-surgical procedures. The reprocessing of endoscopes between procedures to ensure safe reuse with subsequent patients is a complex process that involves nearly 100 manual steps. But endoscope reprocessing is not just time-intensive and costly, it also does not totally eliminate the risk of cross-contamination. For this reason, the use of disposable/single-use endoscopes is becoming more widespread.

Keeping with the trend for disposable medical devices, Medimaging Integrated Solution Inc. (MiiS)developed a camera module with integrated sensor for single-use endoscopes. MiiS is a technology company that develops hand-held medical imaging devices and diagnostic scopes. Since its establishment in 2010, MiiS has collaborated with numerous hospitals and organizations worldwide to provide solutions tailored to their needs.

In order to provide a complete solution, MiiS paired its newly created disposable endoscope instrument with a computing platform. For this, they chose Advantech’s AIM-58 medical-grade tablet because of its reliability, durability, and integration flexibility. The compact design is ideal for mobile applications, while wireless connectivity enables unlimited mobility and seamless medical image transmissions to hospital EMR systems. Compliant with EN 60601-1 medical safety standards, AIM-58also features a 10.1” full HD screen that is IP65 rated for protection from water and dust, facilitating regular disinfection to ensure hygiene and infection control. Moreover, AIM-58 can be deployed for diverse applications and usage scenarios with the inclusion of various optional extension modules and accessories, such as a VESA mount, docking station, and shoulder strap.

Ergonomic Single-use endoscopes designed for easy use both maneuverability

MiiS’ disposable endoscopy solution provides high capabilities in a comprehensive, ergonomic, and sterile system. The endoscope instrument has a lightweight handle and high maximum bending angle for precise control of the endoscope tip, thereby ensuring easy insertion and maneuverability. For medical professionals, the disposability of this solution can minimize cross-contamination and healthcare-associated infections for increased patient safety. The disposability also eliminates endoscope reprocessing, which simplifies workflows and saves costs, making it an ideal diagnostic tool for various healthcare environments.

Since its launch in 2020, MiiS’ disposable endoscopy solution has been deployed in many hospitals worldwide for conducting endoscopic diagnostic testing. Meanwhile, MiiS continues to explore new applications for its single-use endoscope technology, such as for cystoscopy, vitreoretinal endoscopy, bronchoscopy, gastroenterology, and orthopedic surgery. MiiS has also extended its product development to AI-based medical solutions that optimize front-line screening in order to better utilize clinical resources and increase treatment efficiency.

According to MiiS, the single-use endoscope market is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19.8% from 2020 to 2027. Indeed, more and more hospitals are expected to adopt disposable endoscopy solutions in an effort to improve patient care and healthcare outcomes. Amid this growing trend, Advantech’s medical-grade tablets provide the flexible configuration andre liable computing that enables further innovations and advancements in healthcare.
